She is abducted by the Chinese Triads and the boss Han Jiao ends Mei to Chinatown, in New York, to help him in the control of his activities. Meanwhile, the fighter Luke Wright has his life destroyed when he wins a fight against the will of the Russian Mafia and accidentally kills his opponent. The Russian mobsters kill his wife and the alcoholic Luke wanders on the streets and hostels with no objective in life. One day, Han Jiao asks Mei to memorize a long number and soon the Russian Mafia abducts the girl from the Chinese mobs. She escapes from the mobsters and is chased by the Russians; by the corrupt detectives from the NYPD; and by the Triads. When Luke sees the girl fleeing from the Russian mobs in the subway, he protects the girl and discovers that the number she had memorized is the combination of a safe where the Triads keep 30 million dollars. Luke is an elite agent and uses his skills to protect the girl. Mei, a young girl whose memory holds a priceless numerical code, finds herself pursued by the Triads, the Russian mob, and corrupt NYC cops. Coming to her aid is an ex-cage fighter whose life was destroyed by the gangsters on Mei&#39;s trail. If you are watching a Jason Statham film, you are probably expecting action. &quot;Safe&quot; gives you action in spades–once it gets started. In the opening scenes, there are two consecutive flashbacks that serve no purpose but slow the development of the film. But once the narrative gets going, the action is superior.<br/><br/>First of all, there is so much of it. Secondly, the hand-to-hand combat is very convincing–a requirement for any good action film. Lastly, the chase scenes are exciting and well designed.<br/><br/>The story involves a battle between three entities–the Russian mob, the Chinese mob, and New York City police. All three are corrupt organizations, and all three want the same thing–to capture a Chinese girl with important information. Statham&#39;s character (a former undercover cop) determines to protect the child despite overwhelming odds. <br/><br/>The relationship between the two fugitives is critical to the film&#39;s story. Statham is up to the challenge, despite his rough, unemotional façade. One is reminded of Schwarzenegger in &quot;Commando&quot; or Statham himself in &quot;Safe&quot;. The added emotional content elevates this film above many others of the genre. The good guys in this film are easy to spot. Basically, with the exception of Mei and Luke, they don&#39;t have more than 3 speaking lines! This is the Russians against the Chinese against NYPD. It&#39;s fast paced, even with the subtitles, and don&#39;t even think about going to the bathroom. It&#39;s more brutal than the other Statham films I have seen but not too gory. Since it&#39;s one of those on the run type films, Jason doesn&#39;t have the opportunity to set things up like he did in The Mechanic which was one of the best things about that film. It&#39;s hard to keep one step ahead let alone 4 or 5 in this film. There are some good lines and more than one opportunity to laugh out loud. It makes you think about how much you would want someone with an eidetic memory knowing your business. As stated by other reviewers, this isn&#39;t Oscar material but I don&#39;t think anyone who knows Statham&#39;s work expects that from this genre of film. It&#39;s well written and acted and I noticed Kevin Spacey in the Executive Producer credits. Many familiar faces from everything from The Princess Bride to Lethal Weapon. Enjoy. Though Safe initially seems a little darker and more thoughtful than the British star's previous comic-book escapades in "Death Race," "The Expendables" or the "Transporter" trilogy, it ultimately reverts to testosterone-heavy formula.
